I recently added an '86 190D 5 speed to my fleet and while it looks and runs good, it has some climate control issues apparently due to a locked up heater box. The price for a new one is obscenely high and getting one from a PAP seems unlikely in terms of finding one locally or getting one removed and shipped. Any insights?

Agreed with the one important caveat : you must do the periodic analysis or you're just flubbing your dub .
FWIW , 99 % of all privately owned vehicles , are run in _extremely_ severe service , , commuting & stop and go traffic , mixed in with the average short hop drive (under 20 minutes) is the very worst service there is .
Few seem to understand that simple concept , this is why OTR rigs get 500,000 miles out of the same auto tranny your wife fried @ 97,000 .
Synthetics are *very* good dollar value .

I've been driving my old 1976 GMC truck of late , it's (of course) an InLine i6 engine , 4 speed granny gear heavy duty base model old tech lump that's nice if you like Work/Ranch/Farm Trucks (I do) but to - day I hopped into my trusty 1984 Diesel Sports Coupe & headed off to work @ 0-Dark:30 feeling very tired after my late night , it is nice to have the power & comfort of the Mercedes under my butt again and the Becker Electronic softly playing as I glide along the Freeway is nice too .
I've been diligently working on readying my old '78 300CD for sale , I'll miss it once it's gone but for now I need to reduce my fleet of vehicles .
We're supposed to have cooler weather the rest of the week then get to over 100° F by the Holiday .
Anyone who likes LBC's , there's going to be a day meet of them in Golden Cove Ca. , 10:00 ~ 15:00 , I'll have mine there .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Newbie question # 2
NO ! you cannot because the engine is different internally .
FWIW , once you learn to properly tune it up and do a valve adjustment & Diesel Purge , new fuel filters & maybe a set of Monark fuel injectors , you'll find that although it's no fireball off the line , hills won't slow it down much , I used to rally my NA Mercedes Diesel and it outran lots of " Sports Cars " .
Expect to spend some time and effort & $ too , getting it properly sorted out , these are REALLY good drivers , economical and safe too .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Dextron VI Valvoline. How long. in a 240D?
Well said Nate.
I put Amsoil ATF in my replacement tranny, after first running the
regular stuff for 1K. I don't want to leave the ATF in any longer; I'm
just hoping for a longer lasting tranny. It seems to shift better with
Amsoil ATF also. For the MB 300D (240D) it says 30K to change ATF,
whereas my wife's 240 Volvo says 20K, and needs it by then.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Newbie question # 2
Make sure the car is in good tune. How're the valve lash adjustments? Fuel filters in good condition? Don't forget about the strainer in the fuel tank. Or the air filter. A Diesel Purge treatment will insure the injection pump and injectors are clean and running at top efficiency for best power and mileage. Make sure the "throttle" linkage is correctly adjusted to allow full operation of the injection pump. May also want to check the amount of timing chain stretch.
I had a '77 300D, non-turbo. Here at a mile above sea level, it was down to 68 horsepower (they're 80 hp at sea level), and performed adequately. It was no barn-burner, but it generally wasn't the slowest from the stop lights, either. I-70 up the hill, where Vail Pass approaches 11,000 feet above sea level and the car was further down on power, I could just hold 55-60 mph. Pulling off the interstate for whatever reason meant a loooooong time to get back up to speed, so this was avoided at (nearly) all costs.
After all that, perhaps the best advice is to learn to enjoy life at a slower pace....

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] Newbie question # 2
Hello All
I just bought a 1978 300D. It is in very good shape for a car that old.
I am planning on it being my daily driver.
Can I add a turbo from a later diesel? The lack of speed on hills in my biggest problem with the car.
thank you

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Dave here in s..e Ind. mb gen set.
I'd expect that from Government Motors, or Ford, but not from Mercedes There is reason to go to a crossflow head, but the OHC just adds complication, expense and weight for no obvious gain. Always wondered about that... bk --- On Wed, 6/29/11, Bobby Yates Emory <liberty1@gmail.com> wrote:

I am a T-1 certified Amsoil dealer. Amsoil recommends running their ATF for 100K under normal conditions, 50K with severe (towing ect.) Their 15-40 diesel oil is good for 3x OE recommendation or longer as determined by oil analysis. I have been running Amsoil in my duramax GMC since it was new doing an analysis once per year. I got 100K miles out of the first oil batch before the analysis recommended changing the oil. Pretty impressive.
My suggestion, always use the recommendations of the oil company. The should have tested it and going longer could be trouble.
If anyone wants to purchase amsoil, I can set you up as a prefered account and you get 20% off of retail.
