[diesel_mercedes] RE: RE: New Home Page 'Photos

Whatta laugh ! my fat arse on a bicycle......

To - Day Tom came over and we attacked my recalcitrant Diesel Sports Coupe , it turns out I'd waited too long to do a routine valve adjustment , two were tight , I adjusted them to spec. and , as long as we had the rocker box off and apart , took the big linkage plate apart and re swadjed the central pin as it was wobbling about .005" back and forth since I bought the car , this made for sloppy throttle operation , I had  to push further down than I liked before the engine revved up .

The pin proper was also grimy and had crud on it as did the middle of the black plastic pivot thing so I wire brushed the pin and scrubbed the hole in the plastic , lubed both with silicone  and Lo ! it now pivoted freely instead of sluggishly so I took the other pivot apart , cleaned and lubricated it and now the entire throttle assembly is easier to push and the engine responds faster .

I took it for a hard drive after and it still accelerates too  slowly for my taste but it doesn't miss , it does run out of power a bir at 4,000 RPM's where I suppose most folks don't run their engines anyway .

Once on the open highway it fairly easily accelerated to 85 MPH , there were other cars  so I didn't push it harder than that .

I guess either the turbo is getting really bad or the injectors need service or both most likely as it still smokes too much all the time .

I asked my Son to loan me the boost gauge he previously insisted I install , I just want to use it to see what the boost is, how it comes in etc. as I'm betting it comes in late to to turbo bearing drag .

He lost the darn thing .

To-morrow I drive SWMBO's 300TD to work then to the alignment shop to have the front end aligned .

It doesn't feel loose but if they find anything amiss , I'll buy new parts & let them sweat the no fun of front end service .

We also tinkered with Tom's S-Klasse a bit .

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '84 300CD Auto

This is the last tank full from my road rally , it was running poorly , missing/skipping a bit over 3,000 RPM in any gear , this has gotten worse now , this morning (Sunday 10/20) I was barely able to achieve 65 MPH on the freeway flat out floored .

It's definately running too lean , Friday evening I removed the in tank fuel screen  and it is spotless so now I'll be checking for air leaks in the rubber hoses , maybe it needs yet another secondary (spin on) fuel filter even though I changed it less than 10,000 miles ago .

506 miles (I drove it way into the low fuel warning light on to reduce the fuel draining & diesel bath , worked great ~ I spilled some diesel fuel on the cement but took _NO_ diesel bath atall this time)

28.8 MPG , it's been a long time since I got over 25 MPG .

[diesel_mercedes] RE: Have a lead on a 92 300D. Any hints to look for?

Carl ;

IIRC this is the last of the mechanical injection models , an Inline 6 cylinder that's very powerful and great fueleconomy too .

Many of these blew head gaskets so closly inspect the coolant for crud , rust ect. and the oil dipstick for rust , indise of the oil cap for anything but oily residue black or brown only ~ any milky stuff , it needs engine work RIGHT NOW .

Maybe theyhave some old service receipts in the glovebox ? .

I'd say go take a hard look as these are good cars from what I hear .

-Nate

      Carl Asked :

I really don't need this car, but.... it looks like a great deal. I
already have an '81 and '82 240D and a '85 300D. I may just buy this to
resell it.

The want ads at work turn out to be a great find. The ad just says 92
silver 300D turbo diesel 254K miles, part of estate sale.

Looking on the internet, it looks like this could be the 124.133 body,
3.0L OM603.960 engine, inline 6. Is this an indirect injection? Any
other things to look for?

There also was a 4Matic around that time (124.330 with OM603.913
engine). This may be possible as it is in New Hampshire.

From what I have seen, this appears to be a steal at $1000.

Anyone have any warnings?

Carl

[diesel_mercedes] Re: door seal

Max, I put on a drivers side front door seal without adhesive (maybe a dab just to hold things. The seals pretty much go in freely, but talcum powder is useful. I should have gotten an MB seal from Classic as the one I put on (from 2nd source) is a tad fat, so it is not a "perfect" fit.

[diesel_mercedes] Yahoo's Latest Screwup

Max ;

I can't even print out my E-Mails anymore since the latest screwup .

I now hve to read the forum messages by clicking on " conversations " on the home page , it shows them all in date order ,  then I have to  right click each one and select " open in new tab " read it then at the bottom is a hyperlink to read all messages in this group , then there's a funny looking double arrow thing in black and white I have to click , then I get a long list of messages from the original posting , many are just repeats, others are new subjects where the poster was too lazy to create a new thread so those will get lost/overlooked .

I'm insanly jealous of Rob who apparently is the only person on earth still able to see everything as it was before .
