Yes, in older vehicles, the water pump is behind the fan that is behind the radiator. Try to figure out what is flipping the fan belt off. Check all the pulleys that the water pump belt runs over.    Bill in Oregon

Well there is if I do one.  Must have line heaters the strips of special wire that get your injector lines really hot.  210" F and a Vormax or other water heat based fuel heat exchanger.  Minimum heat for veg oil before burning is 165"F.  That is about it.  We do recirculate used oil instead of returning to the tank.  It's called looping.  Keeps the hot oil close to the front of the car.  I just use blue jeans to filter my oil.  SVO that is it.  Lawrence Rhodes...........15 years

Water pumps are easy compared to seeing electrons.

If the water pump is frozen, the pulley stops; the belt does what it wants too at this point of stress.

Grab the water pump pulley and try to turn it. If it turns, does make noise or do you feel friction like the bearing inside is worn out.

Is the pulley shaft loose in the pump or can you pull in and out of the housing even a little bit?  Bill in Oregon

OK...I checked under the hood before removing the alternator.  My fan belt was twisted and off the pulleys.  Turns out that when the belt goes the Brake light and Battery light come on.  Nice to know.  Maybe I tightened it too much.  Take off to test the car and show my mechanic the new battery monitor.  Come home and as I'm coming down a hill the brake and battery light come on.  Now I know what's up.  Go up another hill to my house.  I park the car and it won't shut off so I have to use the emergency off switch under the hood.  She was boiling over too.  I had no interruption of voltage (At speed mostly 13.5 to 13.8 or so)except at idle and it appears I have another problem...Could my water pump be throwing the belt off?  Do I need a new belt?  Do I need a new water pump?  Oh well the pleasures of owning a vintage car.  Any advice welcome.  Lawrence Rhodes

My alternator has 285k on it.  Just what does Bosch do when re manufacturing the alternator.  New bearings I bet and the brush/regulator. The commutator is the only other thing.  Can the commutator go bad?   How often do they go bad?  My alternator was soaked with hydraulic fluid.  That can't be good.   LR

Yes, there are several.  You will need to filter the oil and keep the conversion maintained.

Lawrence,

Since you have 285K miles and the brushes wore unevenly, it may be that one of the slip rings has worn badly or is pitted.  If you have it off the car, you might try removing the voltage regulator / brush assembly and look down the hole the brush came out of to see the condition of the slip rings and compare them.  Slowly rotate pulley, so the ring scans by where you are looking.

( I think we are talking about the same thing.  I think that on a generator or starter, it is a commutator and it is made up of 20 or so little strips of copper.  I think in a Bosch alternator, there are two rings that go all the way around the shaft.  I think that is called a slip ring.  Corrections, anyone?)

Blew the fuse to the cig lighter with multi tester probe..  Replaced fuse.  Start car after charging..  Glows drain battery under 12v.  Now no charging.  Battery & brake light on.  12.6v now while running.  Back on charger.  Took Honda.   Sigh........Lawrence Rhodes
