OK
I took off the rear tire today and took a close look at it. Besides the
tread being low it looked fine. The tires do have some miles on them and
probably need replacing.
Before i took the tire off i rotated it several times, there was no unusual
noises. No clicking or clunking it turned smooth and easily.
I switch the front and back tires and went for a drive. I was on the freeway
for about 2 miles, nothing.
Could a tire that looks fine make that thumping noise when it gets hot? I
think the noise did not start before until i was at freeway speeds for a
half an hour.
Could it be something other then a tire if it only happens when it's been
driven fast for awhile.
Should i just go get new tires?
My 300D is making a loud thumping noise from the right rear of the car. It
first started on the free way. When i pulled off the road to look under the
car there was nothing amiss. When i got back on the road the noise took
awhile to start back up again. The back right CV boot does have some grease
on it but the boot it self is in good shape. Also it's not a clicking sound
like you hear from the front CV joint it's more of a thumping sound.
any ideas
Thanks

I had a tire with a bulge and it only appeared as a noise at speed (65+).
When I got home after a trip and saw the tire bulge, I was
shocked...lucky it didn't blow out on the road.
Good idea to check the Flex disks too.

Ditto, check the tires. Same thing happened to me.
Hey rob, I just read a story about a woman in GG(maybe one of your neighbors), she drugged her husband and cut off his thingy and tossed it in the garbage disposal. OOOOOOO, hope it's not friends of yours. max

Yes, big leak, small leak, as you mentioned.
Once you know which vacuum line is bad, it shouldn't too hard to find
the leak. especially with the vacuum tools people have mentioned. Notice
the color of the tube and follow it back. The door lock vacuum tubes are
all accessible from under the driver's carpet (maybe the trunk and fuel
door too). Also, when the car is running, what vacuum system is working
or not? (locks, a/c, brakes, engine shut off) What I've noticed, is that
the door locks seem to leak more often in the unlocked position. Is
there one that acts differently then the others? Does the engine shutoff
work only when the locks are down (or up)? There's a vacuum diaphragms
at the fuel door, as well as the trunk. The A/C should be easy to test
too, as the vents either open or close, when vacuum is applied by the
A/C controls, which you can tell when the car is running, and the fan is
on. The most common leaks seem to be the A/C pods, door locks
diaphragms, the fuel door diaphragm, and for some, the vacuum tube
connectors. If you need to replace a diaphragm, replace all in that
system, as the other one's are just waiting to go also, or with the door
locks, just have them (3 total) handy to replace as needed. My A/C
vacuum system is leaking vacuum, though it's such a PITA to get in
there, that my system has been isolated by a 1 way valve, so it won't
affect the other systems. Check the easy things first...
LA Nate should have more info on that year's A/C, as he fought with his
for awhile.

Hello All
I am trying to track down the vacuum leaks in my new 1978 300D.
I am assuming that if I pump vacuum into a line and it immediately looses the vacuum it is not supposed to work that way, there is a big leak.
I am also assuming that if it slowly looses the vacuum there is a smaller leak.
Please let me know if I am right.
thank you

Well it depends ;
What color plastic line are you pumping vacuum from & where .
In general no but , there's some wiggle room in there .
Yellow : door , truck & gas flap central locking
Green : HVAC
Brown : engine kill

There is never any need to cut the belt ~ just switch it off and the pulley will spin freely , this is how an AC system works .

I was trying to coax my AC to work one more summer with a couple r134/sealer cans, yet the compressor seems to have exploded, after a month of being fine. The AC stopped being cold suddenly, and the compressor was making an awful noise. I just cut the belt, and will worry about later.

A few things to look for that may or may not be the cause, but can cause similar
issues are all the vacuum rubber connectors, plastic vacuum tubing, and
the changeover valve. Also look at the charge lines. A question from me now,
can you switch back to pump diesel while using bio diesel?

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] 86 300SDL poor initial acceleration
I've had a recurrent problem with my 86 300SDL. It has about 310K on the engine.
The initial acceleration can be very sluggish; rpm won't go above about 1500,
even when I floor the accelerator, and the car just crawls until it starts to
get above 10 or 15mph. Once I get above 15 or 20 mph, rpm will ramp up normally,
kicking up above 3000 rpm or more before shifting to the next gear, and
acceleration is fine. But initial acceleration, especially when starting up a
hill from a stop, can be almost nil. My mechanic had the fuel injector pump
rebuilt; that cured the problem for a while. Now the problem has returned. It
seems worse when the engine is cold or when operating at higher altitudes; at
6000 feet above sea level, even after a long drive and a fully warmed-up engine,
the car just wouldn't start up a steep hill from a stop. The engine ran; just no
acceleration. I run my 300SDL on B99 biodiesel in summer and B50 in winter. Any
ideas?

(The '48-ish Chrysler behind it looks pretty straight and complete....)
For what it's worth; it seems the '86's around here with 6-cylinders have the 4.3 V6, so, you're looking for something earlier than that....

I'm in So. Cal. .
Beaters/junkers O.K. , it'd be nice to be able to drive it on the trailer .

They're rebuilding the L.A. area freeways gangbusters ~ that stimulus money is really working out well , I can't believe how much road repair is going on right now , they'd pretty much ignored crack repairs for years & years so our freeways are badly beat up now .
Most nights they close 1/2 the lanes and get right to it so rapid progress is being made .

LOL!!
Three thoughts:
The Russian mud is UNBELIEVABLE and ever-present (even today on paved, city roads), and the primary reason Hitler's Operation Barbarossa was stopped dead in it's tracks, within 10-miles of Moscow. I've never seen such a thick, sticky goo.
Now you know why Russian motorcycles are rarely sold without a sidecar. And, are more often run in the Winter, when the mud has frozen over than in Spring or Fall.
Notice the Toyota in the second to the last photo? Right hand drive, direct from the homeland, and very common the further east one goes in Siberia.
