It's February, what's your Diesel engine's temperature gauge read ? .
Mine had dropped below 80* C and kept dropping (we've been mid 30's to high 40's F for a while now) as I drove on the highway late nights/early mornings, lukewarm heat at best .
So, I decided to flush my cooling system, drained and re filled it with distilled water and Prestone yellow bottle flushing agent, unplugged the monovalve and direct connected the electric auxiliary water pump to ensure the heater matrix was properly and fully flushed, hit the i5 freeway North and didn't stop for a couple hours, after I'd driven the grapevine over the mountains to Wheeler Ridge (! SNOW ! COLD !) where I stopped for an early lunch and then drained and refilled the water jacket with fresh distilled water and drove back home again, drained out the slightly cloudy (brown, rust) water, replaced the thermostat with a brandy new 80* C one from The Classic Center and filled the cooling system with GL-5 coolant mixed 50/50 with distilled water, as I was locking my back gate with the engine idling in the 48* F cool, the heater came on strong and the temperature gauge rose to 84* C .
I wish I'd had more time to flush it longer as I don't like *any* dirt/rust/whatever in my cooling system .
When I removed the old (about four years) t'stat it was open just a tiny bit, I pushed on it and it snapped closed, it was made in Germany but _no_ MB star stamped in it so aftermarket .
The thermostat in our OM616/617 and other Mercedes engines, is in the _inlet_, not the outlet so if the engine is running too cold it closes and only circulates the coolant in the engine .
Most vehicles use an outlet thermostat .
I noticed and immediate boost on power and the boost gauge comes up quicker with less foot throttle too, maybe this is why my fuel economy has been so low .
I was thinking I'd need to buy another monovalve or the electric control box behind the glove box.....
Whew .
Now to see if it still runs cool this Summer =8-) .
