I had a lot of old V.W.'s too......and, abused the crap out of them. some
bugs, some ended up dune buggies, or Baja bugs, even built one
"rail"..........yup, knowing what to change, and what to fix.
The only time I saw them need new engines, is when they were really hopped
up, very "used", or, super neglected..........
Always had to watch the #3 valve.

Absolutely not so ! .
If you'd seen the rattletrap VW's I used to drag out of hedgerows , desert
ditches and junkyards all across America then tinker back to life and never
walk , you'd be amazed .
Although I'll prolly never go back , they were wonderful vehicles , dead
simple and super cheap to keep running , you just had to do the _right_ ,
used parts or new , the devil is always in the details .
I used to patch - assemble engines from left over junk and never had even
_one_ break or leak on me .
Simply MARVELOUS engineering and build quality , the problem begins when
folks decide to do it differently than it was designed .

known there were manuals you could buy : Max says: You were not alone there.
Every VW on the road had a new engine just installed or needed one. Max

Insulation in the floor is such a good deal. We can walk around barefoot when it's -20 here. Love warm floors. Max

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Trailer hitch.
I have one partly uninstalled from one of my TD's. It was so bolted on I can't get it off. As I remember my trouble was trying to unbolt the braces that went to somewheres around a crossmember above the axles. What a pain in the ass. But I am sure it would pull anything. I have 2 TD's to get rid of. 1980 and 81 and I am not too keen at taking things apart anymore. Someone should show up with a BIG trailer and haul them off. max

I looked at all of those that you sent, so did Kevin. He says he's either seen or has some of them, but he thinks he needs the one specific to the '80 300SD.
Your thoughts?
