Dean,
Your alternator woes (very dim not charging light) suggest to me that there is a poor commection in the not charging light circuit.

I found another person on the web that had purchased the same 'unit'? at walmart. I went to walmart.com and did not find it. I did find this on deal extreem, and I think it would please those who want this type.I prefer this one, but it is a bit more $My '83 300D also doesn't charge. I replaced the brushes and nothing. I was about to take out the alt to have it tested, but did get voltage 'once' so I know it is good. I DO have the junction box and all connections are clean and tight. I started tearing into the dash because I read on a google search that if the charge light doesn't work, that it won't activate the ALT.During my dinking around, that is when I did get 14v but later i tried again and it was back to no charge. The light is not visibly on to look at it normally, but cupping your hands around it and shoving your face on it, you can see it barely glowing.........Anway that was a few months ago. It sits and we have been driving the SDL.
