Re: [diesel_mercedes] wrench

Tony,

The two valve adjustment wrenches are 14mm.   There is an optional third wrench.

A good yard sale find.

Thanks, but I can hear the motor running in the door, so it is likely the linkage somwhere. I suppose it could just be a clip come off. It was my bad, I was closing the window and thinking about something (senoritas ??) and left my finger on the switch.

Tony, If your windows are electric, you should check the switch and see if it works. People have posted about spraying the switch with electric parts cleaners.

I took apart my rear window because it would not go up, was going to wedge a board in it to hold up the window, but the light bulb went on in my brain, and I tried the window switch in the door, and it worked both ways up and down. Which meant it was the console switch.

I hope it saves you from taking the door panel off.

Looky here : http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Mercedes_Benz_SL/message/4297

Read here : Re: LIFETIME muffler hangers

Better , _lifetime_ exhaust hanger loops : Ma 'Benz took pity on us (or the SL
owners anyway) and re-designed them to include an endless loop of tiny chain
inside the rubber. Part number is : 107 492 00 44 and they're available from
your Mercedes dealer . . . or from any German Partshaus .

O.K. , there ya go .

They look a bit different too , if you're not sure when they hand you the new
part , try to bend it in 1/2 ~ it won't go .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Country Rust Repairs

Just choose a light color so you'll notice right away if the rust begins to spread .

Those $2.00 exhaust hangers _WILL_ break on you , look up my Service Notes on " lifetime Exhaust Hangers Donuts " , they're only $7.00 each and most muffler shops have them , they have a tiny bicycle chain loop moulded inside and so cannot ever break and drop your exhaust ~ to test , try flexing it sideways , it can't be flexed nor bent .

You're on the road to Automotive Nirvana now Trish .

I have given up on encapsulation. All paints and encapsulations crack or get chips. The water creeps under the paint and rusts

Use a soft coating that will reseal

I use Fluid Film

I just bought those muffler hangers at NAPA (special order) for $2.99 each...they forgot to give me Kevin's military discount.

I use an 8" piece (or however long you need it) of 1/4" fuel hose and loop a wire coat hanger through it twice around to make a muffler hanger donut. When you get it the right size, cut the ends of the wire to leave 4" extra, fold the two ends across each other to link them, and tuck the ends back into the hose. Works fine and you can make it the exact size you need. Doesn't rattle. I thought I had a photo of one in the photo section but couldn't find it just now. Maybe you can figure it out from the description...

Re: [diesel_mercedes] 240D Update

Hindsight.  I'm in the same boat...learning my lessons as I go.  It appears that my exhaust is hanging a bit too low...it's lower than the oil pan! I scrapped a tiny bit leaving my driveway.  Next week when it dries out (been raining for a 24hrs) and I can get out I'll go have it looked at.

I wish I had my camera running when I came in yesterday!  Oh boy it was FUN!  Really!  I got all the way up to the "circle" which goes around our trash/burn pile (in the country we burn what we can't compost), when I turned to go right, the ground was slimy and I went in a 360 and wound up where I started.  I got straightened out and made it around the corner the next time!  If I didn't have baby chicks in the car I might have done it a couple more time just for fun!  But I also don't like tearing up the driveway.

I found some things that were better than expected, and a couple things that were a bit worse. The sway bar link isn't broken. The dragging sound was the exhaust pipe rubbing on the axle. As a temporary repair, I replaced the missing donut with a couple zip ties until I get the parts. The bad part was when I jacked up the left front to switch out the badly worn tire with the much better spare. This was when I found a bit of rot under the jack point, same situation on the other side. The rocker panels and floorboards seem ok, but as you go under the car, there's rot in the whole corner on both sides just behind the wheelwells. This isn't turning out to be such a good car after all. I'll probably end up getting my money back out of it and move on.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] New Catalog

That catalog is helpful to have, sometimes just to know the name of the
part you need.

Projects: I just changed the oil & filter, a little down the road I want
to change out the rubber brake lines (the new ones are sitting in the
garage), replace the low pressure power steering hose, as well as fix
the A/C for the summer road trips. Yes, that old paint needs wax.

Pretty pictures, but high prices - aiming for the newer MB crowd with $$ to spare. But, if you are in this group, you need these for the schematics and the pictures. Also, gives you a high end price comparison. When I see a $100 or $200 plastic lens, then I know why I go to a PAP for such things.
