Re: [diesel_mercedes] Cleaning MB - Tex

Brake cleaner works pretty good, and it might be similar to what the dry cleaners use.
I've used it to clean off grease and tree sap from clothes.

A while ago I found a like new rear seat cushion in a North Hollywood Pick-A-Part Junk Yard and bought it .

Some damnfool used it as a creeper on the next car in the rows and liberally smeared his greasy filthy hands all over it .

I have been unable to get a few of the ancient grease stains off it , I have use my regular Meguiar's # 40 , Aerosol Upholstery Cleaner , Simple Green , even some ETHER (starting fluid) on a rag , nothing doing ~ it won't budge .

At this point most of the seat looks like new , the padding is better than the padding in the 240D's rear seat now so I really want to use it .

Maybe some _Gasoline_ on a rag ? .

I'm stumped .

As long as I had the Meguiar's out I set up and cleaned the door card and arm rest I removed from my '84 300TD , those now look AS-NEW again , thanx to a soft bristle brush and some patience .

The little buttstock cups were what I was thinking of Bill ;

Those are several good types of grease there but all kinda $pendy to my taste .

It's pouring down rain here so I won't be fooling with it to - night .

As always : THANK YOU ! .

Last night I finally began to learn how to service/repair these , it doesn't seem terribly difficult .

I took one apart by depressing the limiting tang then wrapped it in a heavy cloth as I was concerned about flying parts due to the heavy springs inside it .

Turns out you need to close the door 2/3 the way shut so it's not in either of the two detent positions before removing it from the car , I was unable to press or batter the check out of either detent positions using hands , blocks of wood , hammers or mallets .

Once the sliding part came out of the 'U' shaped frame , only one large ball bearing popped out into the rag , I took it the rest of the way apart and spent some time cleaning out the 30 year old rock hard mix of carriage grease and fine dust ~ much of it had to be chipped out with a long narrow tip screwdriver , more on this to come .

I was going to use Lubriplate # 105 Lithium based Brake Grease but I'm beginning to think maybe Gun Cariage grease , like Mercedes specifies for the sun roof sliding parts , is a better choice .

Too bad all those WWII Surplus Stores have long gone out of business , the tiny pots of Lubriplate dustless gun carriage grease were excellent and usually only a dime or so .

The sun went down on me before I was finished cleaning so more on this soon .

It's raining in La La Land to - day but I really need to get this done .- Nate
