[diesel_mercedes] Re: Radiator in but...

Yes , cobble up some thick plastic or sheet metal to block the opening , you need good air flow for proper cooling .

I didn't realize you were near Tehachipi , I like it up there an old Buddy of mine lives there now .

Be sure to take the old road past the loop , it's a nice drive even  if you don't like rail fanning .

[diesel_mercedes] Air Cleaner Fun

Max ;

You should live where you like it and so far , it appears you really like Country Living so stay just BE MORE CAREFUL ! .

Those 6 MM studs are the top 1/2 of the rubber air cleaner mounts so just reach into your glove box and take ot the three new ones all wise Diesel M-B Owners carry , replace them all ,if one is old and crappy , the others are right behind it .

DO go through Borrego Springs , I always stay in Stanlund's Resort , it's way past it's 1960 prime but quiet and comfy etc, close to the roundabout in the center of town .

I hope to get to meet you when you're here .

I could not help but notice a fucking mouse(one of the many hazards of country living) had nested in the air cleaner, and chewed and crapped and pissed, and generally made a mess. So of course I have a spare on the shelve, but it is so messy I wanted to take off the canister(housing) and wash it out. Three 10mm nuts on studs, first two twist off fine, third, I could tell by 40 years of experience it is gonna snap. I probably already went too far, but screwed it back in place, did not snap. What should I do? What can be done if it breaks? I can tell its gonna break if I try and unscrew the nut. I opted to clean out the air filter housing in place, but then went for the ill fated 4-wheeler ride, crashed, had to crawl home, lay on the couch till today. Car will wait, cant drive it anyway now, just getting it ready for spring. I probably should live in Temucala or some warm place like that, maybe a avocado ranch in Escondido, Max

[diesel_mercedes] It Started !

YAY ! my poor old Sports Coupe has been sitting so to - night I loaded the trunk up with Chevy 292 parts that need cleaning and lit it off to come here & check my E-Mail , it roared to life as usual but the off idle acceleration is flat , nearly as slow as a NA OM617 so I guess that turbo is prolly fully junked up with oily residue and needs overhauling .

Anyways , it's nice to be in a car with an FM radio so I can listed to Christmas Carols as I run errands .

Maybe I'll get enough time to add the wreath to the grille .

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Weather

Can you cut the nut with a Dremel tool? I use an extension cable and 1-inch diameter cut-off disks.

I keep my small disks that are almost used up for small, close in problems.  Bill in Oregon

You are complaining ,  about rain?, In California? I know, by reading its been raining lately, big storms, storms of the decade even. But Cali is still in a long term drought, needs tons more of rain. Have you seen Lake Shasta lately? I have. Looks very low, in fact lower than I've ever seen it, maybe its lower than its ever been since they built it.  Why dont you just come up here and use my shop? Also this is dry country but still green . While you are here you could rebuild all my old China Diesels just for fun .Max

It's been soaking rains off and on a few weeks now , pi$$es me off sorely as I'm trying to overhaul an old i6 truck engine in my back yard ~ I don't have any cover to work under so as soon as I feel the *first* drop , I have to hustle and cover up the open engine(s) before anything gets wet .

It's supposed to begin raining again to - night so I washed & RAIN-X'ed the windshield on my Met and will try to get one more engine bolted up and lifted off the ground onto a engine stand right after Work to - day .

Then I'll be able to easier yank the crankshaft out , I'm using it in a newer , better block .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Radiator in but...

Lawrence,

No experience with this, but...

I feel you should definitely block off the air flow and not let it bypass the radiator.  If you have an appropriate piece of plastic, that would be great.  If not, aluminium flashing (for roofing) should be good.

Good thinking  --- go for it.

Hi Lawrence. Why would you want to block air from going thru the oil
cooler?? Or did I misunderstand?

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Where's Silvia?

That's great ~ your Son will hopefully get good use out of it and become enamored of smelly old slow & noisy Mercedes Diesels .

? You put the car on the train to Florida ? .

It's been a while since my last post, spending the week in Gaithersburg, MD at NIST this week - hanging with the Model Based Design crowd and learning everything I can about Mechanical Engineering...

So on Monday of Thanksgiving week, we drove Silvia (1984 300 SD) from Littleton, MA to Lorton, VA to board the Amtrak Car train, bound for Sanford, FL to deliver her to my son in flight school @ Florida Institute of Technology.

Packed to the gills with a custom built toolbox for my son, (thanks for everyone's suggestions!), our luggage, and three of us, we left at 9pm and Silvia drove through the night at full power, not a hiccup, not a hint of complaint. Easily 25+ MPG the whole way. It's ever so much easier to drive through New York city at 2am, and even easier to drive through Washington DC at 4 am...

She seemed to enjoy the train ride, and thankfully started right up for the train car attendants in Sanford the next day. A short ride from Sanford to Melbourne, and we picked up my son and at the last minute, his new girlfriend for the ride to Key West.

Silvia seemed to enjoy being back in Florida (her original port of entry), as we headed for the Keys. Stopped in Miami to refuel and top off the AC compressor. Packed even more to the gills, now with 5 pax and all our luggage, she was a little slower off the mark (if you can imagine that), but still willing to do 72MPH @ 3K RPM and 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

We made it to Key West (where I was born), and spent that week driving about and generally enjoying ourselves. We had Thanksgiving dinner @ Kelly's (named after Kelly McGillis of Top Gun fame), and the site of the very first Pan Am ticket office. Friday flew by and before we knew it, we were headed back north through the Keys to Miami, where we parted ways with Silvia, my son and his girlfriend. While we flew home to Boston, he drove back to Melbourne, both parties arriving to their destinations at nearly the same time.

Since then, he's taken it to Orlando and back at least once, maybe twice (he'll only admit to once) as a taxi run for his college buddies....at present she's parked, locked, car covered and in a safe car park. He even managed to coax the cruise control back to life, which I had given up on 2 years ago (Apparently, I just wasn't sufficently patient to hold the actuating lever up long enough to engage!).

Hopefully Silvia is now happy in Florida, and serving a new and noble purpose. No doubt I'll be posting updates and perhaps the occasional request for advice. If anyone knows of PAP's in the Melbourne, FL area - or even better - a reputable Mercedes diesel mechanic in the area, please let me know.

That's it for now, happy holidays to all, and here's to 2015 and another 25K mi to add to the 300K already on this insanely reliable motor and transmission...

cheers,

-Barton
