Either the belt is oil soaked and stretching or , you're missing something .
I have a 1982 240D and the belt has only needed adjusting once or twice in the years we've owned it .
_ALL_ the various 17MM ATF nuts & bolts must be loosened to affect proper adjustment then they must all be tightened again to keep the alternator from creeping .
I wish I was there to figure it out as it really is dead simple once you figure our the system the Germans designed .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] 1982 240d alternator belt
My 85 300d had the adjusting threaded rod snapped
I needed to get it running soon and didn't want the shipping time nor the high cost for a replacement
I ground a slot across the head of the old bolt and mig welded a threaded rod into the slot. I used a large washer and nut to tighten it
it will just not stay tight no matter what even with proper technique on the adjuster bolt. this is not an early star wheel adjusterhas anyone home built an alternative?
thanks in advance as usual.

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Door Panels
W-123 , clips hold the bottom and lower sides in , need to be -carefully- pried loose before lifting up to clear the top edge .
W-126 , is ALL held in by easy to break moulded in plastic tabs , remove the arm rest and inner handle plastics , the two rear chrome screws and plate , one or two tiny phillips screws in the upper rear window surround then -gently- bump the whole panel _UP_ from the very bottom , DO NOT pull at the top or you'll snap off the five black plastic tabs....
Once it's high enough up , about 3/4" (19MM) , the lower part can be swung away 1/4" or so then you can ever so gently lift the top edge loose .
I know about the No. Vegas P-A-P scrounger , he missed the European gasser bumpers on one badly rusted W-123 , I was in serious pain thay day and so onl;y took the rear one , not realizing it'd take me _years_ to fin the matching front Euro. bumper .
Gasser bumpers are *much* more svelte and pretty than are the Diesel Euro. bumpers , God help me if I ever have a collision tho' .

Nate, not planning to go through Lost Wages this time, have been to the one on the north end of town, a couple of times. There is a Mercedes rebuilder that picks it over almost daily so you kind of have to take his leavings, but it has worked out pretty well for us so far. Will have to wait, till we get over on I5 for PAP / =. Will come over the Tehachapi to miss LA, then boogie N. Bought a little trailer in Yuma to help get stuff out of the car. Does the door liner just pop off at the bottom?
Tony.

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Waiting on sunshine
Reading all this , I can't say I miss the Mud Season all that much .
To - day I went out for coffee for SWMBO in the very first Mercedes Diesel we bought , a 1982 340D that has well over 300,000 miles and still runs fine and is 100 % reliable in spite of the engine and tranny both being worn out .
This car is the one that set me on The Mercedes Road , I didn't know when we bought it for $1,500.00 and idling on three cylinders , that my life would change so drastically in a few short years, I can't drive cl;utches anymore easily so all my VW's and other old cars are gone ,I now have three Mercedes Diesels , a Metropolitan Nash FHC and a '69 Chevy C/10 pickup truck , _all_ have slushboxes , a thing I couldn't even contemplate five years ago but I'm still mobile and so happy .
Hang in there Trish ~ in time you'll learn how to power your Mercedes through deep mud , the trick (IMO) is : keep it in "S" drive and don't give it too much throttle but don't slow down either....
Tom and I got through a really bad patch in the absolute middle of nowhere New Mexico , miles from any pavement or help , the others before us in their pickups had scrubbed the trees pretty good , Tom and I surveyed the so called road (a mud bog) and decided we'd get through O.K. in his old '81 300SD and we did in spite of 1,000 # of crap he always carries .
As you have a dirt drive , consider some LT truck tires, the old typ that are tall and narrow and have good lugs for dirt & mud roads .
These really are good cars , they just -look- like Luxo - Boats but they're made to go the distance , safely , quickly and comfortably , what more can you ask ? .
