[diesel_mercedes] Re: SD heaating or lack thereof

You could check to see if the fan motor is receiving voltage. If so, maybe it needs brushes. (?) If it's not getting voltage, I think there is probably a relay somewhere. You could check to see if that's getting voltage and if so, if it's sending it out the way it is supposed to. But I don't know what pins go where.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] 83 300SD Hazard Switch Removal and Repair Q's

Consider taking all of the switches out and cleaning them if you are removing the console cover. Lot of crud and grime get in those electrical parts. Lots of little springs and BB's can pop loose too, and are hard to find on the floor. Easy to do, just go slow. I used nail polish remover to clean with, but  other cleaners work too.

So, I'm aiming to take out my hazard switch and give it a good cleaning since I think that may be the source of these 2 symptoms:

1) turn signals light up - on dash cluster and at the exterior bulbs - but they don't blink (in either place)

2) hazard lights up all the turn signal bulbs, but they don't "flash"/blink

PO was supposed to deliver a "new" hazard switch, haven't heard from her in a month. I know they're cheap, but my budget is pretty darn tight right now, so I'd rather save my $ for things like a new voltage regulator ;) IF I can fix the problem with no money. Worth a shot.

I removed the ashtray + coin tray
(I also removed the panel around my shifter and gave that and all switches a good cleaning!)

...and then I got stuck at the radio. I don't want to pay money for removal keys if I don't have to...I have an aftermarket Alpine head unit in there...any tips for free removal? Or can I get the upper switch panel out without removing the radio?

Thanks,
Caitlin

[diesel_mercedes] 83 300SD Oil Pressure Gauge/Sensor

The gauge was stuck on "highest" even with the battery disconnected.

Took a peek near the sensor switch part at the bottom of the oil filter housing and found a dangling wire. Looks like it is the wire that is meant to connect into the rubber fitting that attaches to the oil pressure sensor switch.

Pretty sure this is my problem (pic in my "Betty and the Beginner" album), but exactly how do I fix it? Any tips? Hints? Instructions?

Remember, as new as I am to "car stuff", I'm even newer to "electrical" :)

I spent the entire day online comparing motor mounts.  I can get 2 for $98 including shipping from Diesel Giant.  I saw them cheaper on some sites, and way more expensive on others.  This is an important part and a huge undertaking to get done.  I only want to deal with this once.

How do I choose a brand? But how much to pay when prices vary so widely?

Re: [diesel_mercedes] motor mounts How to choose brand?

Trish - most of these parts come from the same manufacturers, and are shipped from common warehouses. Like perfume, the middle men get to add a "mark up" so be a prudent shopper. A motor mount is a pretty basic piece or metal and rubber. Like getting clothes from Ross and Marshalls, or from Pierre Cardin - sometimes the same people sew them, but everyone gets to put a label on. Personally, I get my t shirts from the local 3 for $10 Koreans. My wife gets my t shirts from Kohls.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: 83 300SD Instrument Cluster (Phase 1)

I confirmed that indeed the gauge is stuck as high as it goes when the cluster is merely plugged in (no key in ignition, car obvi not running, etc) at all times.

I'm not totally sure what to look for other than brown wires that have "loose connections" and tighten them...and maybe bare wires too...

My electrical gremlin count is growing and I still haven't even found/fixed one...(ok, that's cuz I'm sort of avoiding them)

Good to know I can shoot for 130MPH ;) despite what the speedo says...but the one that goes higher was orig to the car and at least i have a spare for if/when I send out mine for repair.

Gonna go check the voltage regulator (as suggested) and also see if I can't rejuvenate my hazard switch in hopes of restoring signals (they light, inside and out, but don't blink). While after the hazard, I hope to check and dig around in the wiring behind the console in hopes of finding gremmies.

Some impressions of Mazatlan.

Let me know if I should stop putting them up.

Took the Mercedes to a really good mechanic here in Mazatlan, gonna get him to pull some wrenches, valves, vac system, cruise etc. then gonna get the AC done and hopefully if you guys will send me some cash will get er painted.
