Re: [diesel_mercedes] When do glow plugs go off?

You can hear the "clunk" when relay shuts off indicating the glow plugs are hot enough to burn the fuel. Somewhere between 10 and 15 seconds. Don't pay any attention to the dash light, mine goes off earlier than it should. The sound of the "clunk" will never fail you.

Rodger,

Nate knows more than I.

The plugs can not have zero resistance, but their resistance is so low - 2 or 3 ohms - that a meter may report it as zero.

If the plug has burned out, it will have infinite resistance, in other words there is no connection between the shell of the plug and the stud sticking out for the power wire.

I have the impression they should stay on for about 10 seconds.  (My DPO replaced the official relay with an on - off relay, so I have to guess at mine.)

Hello All

In my 1978 300D the glow plugs are powered after the light goes off.
I think they are in parallel a circuit so they may be the faster plugs.

How long should they stay on?

If I am using my ohm meter correctly there are zero ohms resistance on the plugs. I will have a friend check the resistance. in case I am wrong.

Could the plugs staying on cause the plugs to burn out and have no resistance? (the car will not start)

Where is the glow plug relay? I looked at pictures on ebay but can not find it.

thank you
Rodger
