Brian,

POR20 is reputed to be great stuff, but it can not be in the sun.

If the sinner has rust, POR for the first coat and then his gold acrylic for the top coat might be a good program.

VHT header paint will do that, and POR 20 is said to be good to 1400 degrees...

I've never had a paint problem on the 300D with no hood pad that I have painted with Centari acrylic and hardener.  Don't use POR even underneath.  The best procedure for paint is: use RustMort or another conversion coating on any rusty patches followed by a self etching primer followed by a primer surfacer over the areas that you have filled or sanded through.  Assuming that you haven't taken the car down to bare metal, use a sealer to provide an even color and finish over the whole car.  Follow this with your topcoat.  There is sometimes confusion between single stage and single component paint.  Single stage tends to mean that it isn't topcoated with clear.  Two component usually refers to the adding of hardener to the paint.  I believe that two component paints are the best bet.  The two component urethane, or epoxy primers and sealers will do a much better job of protecting the car body while a two component acrylic or urethane top coat will usually provide a higher gloss finish than single stage paint without hardener.  The hardener also has the advantage of shortening the cure time which means that there is less time for dust to settle on the wet finish.  Centari is a good acrylic single stage paint that you can add hardener to, but talk to your paint supplier.  There are also several significantly cheaper urethanes or acrylics that will also do a good job.  The downside to the two component paints is that they contain exceedingly harmful components that shouldn't be inhaled.  You can pick up a relatively inexpensive supplied air mask that will solve this problem.  Depending on the airflow where you are painting and how long you want to live, you can sometimes get by with a good non air supply face mask with the right cartridges.
