Ah, ok. Well, I doubt the Euro headlights are actually "starving" the engine of air. A diesel, especially, will take whatever air it needs from wherever it will. Maybe it's not cold, fresh air, but, I'm sure it's not starving.
These Euro vs. North American-spec headlight discussions always remind me of one that was on the old W108 board some 12- 15-years ago. It was pointed out that, while the reasons all vehicles sold in North America required round, sealed beam headlights were a bit murky and even conspiratorial, the fact is that a round, convex surface will spread the force of an impact over a wider area, lessening the chance of shattering. Add to that was the availability of very bright units on the aftermarket by S.E.V Marchal, Cibie and others, and many of the rally and racing crowd would often replace their Euro set-up with those from North American-spec cars. In the '70s, SAAB, for instance, substituted the whole front end of their (then) champion rally team cars with the ones for North American cars when the 96 and 95 went from round headlights to flat, squarish ones (1970-71).
(The flat, squarish headlights much easier lent themselves to the installation of headlight wipers, mandatory on cars sold in Sweden after 1971).
What struck me as funny was that, on the W108 board, there was active commerce between the North American and Euro/Aussie members, trading headlight systems. The Euro/Aussies wanted the better performance the North American headlights provided, while the Americans liked the Euro look....
