I had an aunt and uncle on the paternal side of the family that lived in Monterrey and a cousin on the maternal side that lived in Guadalajara. I've been to both places and many more. I feel so at home in Mexico.
It's just like here in the US, be smart. I live 40 miles S of Dallas, TX USA. There are plenty of areas I wouldn't go in the daylight, let alone at night.
Not to start an argument, but there are places in the US, Canada & Mexico where you should not go at night. We feel very safe here, we sit in the plaza and watch kids, 3YOlds running around playing at night without a care in the world.
