You might look into vertical axis wind turbines ("vawt").

WOW that one's cool looking.  I've not seen that one. There is a vertical one I had done research on many years ago, but at the time it was unheard of for a household to have one.  Not sure if they ever downsized it for the general public.  I lost the link to their page a couple of computer crashes ago. :)
