All,
BMW and M/B are using nitrogen for two reasons. 1, it is dry and stable and 2, has less seep leakage. These are important to them for the Federally mandated tire pressure warning system. N will maintain a more constant pressure reading, cold to hot, than will normal compressed atmosphere which could set off an out of spec warning. Being dry and clean less chance of "crud" interfering with the pressure transmitter inside the tire. We have found no real benefit from N other than those reasons. It is possible for the cars stability programs to default to a limp mode if it detects a low tire. We have had more than one M/B in the shop for a lack of power or a drivability issue and found the low pressure warning on causing the problem. I personally dont run N and I have the machine to make it. (Well to be correct, we don't make nitrogen we just separate out the other gasses LOL.)
