[diesel_mercedes] Re : Tranny shifting & Service

Sears sells a nice trolly jack with two safety stands .

I too am not only , uh ' middle aged ' but crippled but I have only a slab of cement to work upon (thanx to Tom it now has a canvas sun cover, much needed) , you *MUST* jack up the car to do tranny works .

Often the filter is *so* clogged (Mercedes uses real tranny filters , not just screens like everyone else) that it doesn't pass enough fluid & starves , sort of like the old GM Turbo Hydro 400 slushbox .

Once you've properly serviced the tranny , it is time to replace the soft & blubbery vacuum hoses at not only the modulator but also everywhere under the hood as the connectors tend to leak .

_THEN_ , you get a vacuum gauge (inexpen$ive fuel pump tester @ FLAPS) & a plastic vacuum 'T' & 15' of vacuum hose & begin the fun of testing the vacuum signal at the modulator while you drive , then adjust to suit .

The basic idea is : 15" or so @ idle , it must drop as you depress the throttle , reaching zero " as the pedal hits the floor .

Of course , there's a hard to find used plastic clip on the vacuum adjuster valve , it's always brittle & easy to break , the valve often is worn out and leaKY TOO , ALL FUN THINGS TO CHECK , ONE BY ONE , IN THE CORRECT ORDER , BEFORE YOU ADJUST anthing . oops , dang caps lock , sorry) .

I hope this is helpful ? . the Mercedes , being a German car , is infinately adjustable , it all just takes time and effort plus everything must be ' Just So ' , not like your old Chevy , if you want things to work correctly .

All this is *VERY* DIY freindly , remember : if you screw it up , it was bad anyways and your local Indy M-B Mechanic can set it right easily . the good ones , they'll always like the older Mercedes moreso than the newer ones .

Most of my old Mercedes all shift fairly firmly , not so the '82 240D , I know it needs a tranny rebuild so I'm nursing it along until it fails compeletly .

I too am wary of slushboxes , I'll do exterior adjustments after a ful routine service but that's about it .

Regular old Dexron is what I use .

Many European Partshaus' have the correct Mercedes Benz ATF in stock, far cheaper than the dealer sells the same stuff .
