Re: [diesel_mercedes] turbo oil leak

I may take care of this issue (on Mary, my driver) before I die. At the moment I am fixing it with cat litter on the ground + 1 quart per month in the pan. When summer arrives I will run the car through an under body car wash, hoist the car, and look things over (or under). At the moment, it is raining and I am staying indoors.

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] turbo oil leak

Hi all

I am writing with a question re my 82 300D turbo, 200k miles, original motor including original Garrett turbo.  I have an oil leak that seems to come from the rear end of the turbo (e.g., where the exhaust leaves the turbo into the flexible part of the exhaust pipe).  After a drive it leaves several drips on the ground.  I am assuming that some rear seal within the turbo is leaking.  I am writing to see if anyone can help me further diagnose this - is this reflective of some simple oil seal change, or does it likely mean the bearings and or impellar shaft have too much play and would also need replacement?  I am willing to just replace the turbo if need be but it would be ideal for me to understand better what this type of oil leak means.  The car has been well cared for including frequent oil changes, but the first owner (1982-1996, 125k miles) probably did not let it idle much before shutting it off.  Thank you for any help.

Andrew
