'80 300D been bomb proof till this am. Shifter went suddenly sloppy is in neutral wont go into any gear just comepletely loose. Thankfully it rolled(with me driving) back to the house and into the drive. any thoughts?

Check the shift linkage, one or more levers have probably disconnected.  You probably could use new bushings on the shift lever arms as well.
