[diesel_mercedes] Re : Exhaust Smoke

As it not only smoked blue (oil) but covered the cove in nasty hard to remove Diesel Smoot every two weeks , and also always had wetness inside the turbo's snout , I was thinking that yes , the turbo seals were shot and allowing it to pass engine oil into the intake .

One of the things I checked each time I checked a turbo on a junker was : remove the black plastic intake 'U' boot and wipe my finger 'round inside the turbo's snout . most have a fair good bit of oil there plus of course , how muc radial and axial play the shaft has , along with does it spin freely or bind ? .

They're supposed to have minute amounts of axial play as the shadt runs in an oil bath but axial play s a big no - no .

So when I found a really clean inside and dry turbo on a junker that matched my '84 , I grabbed it and so far it seems O.K.with less smoke .

Your black smoke as the engine spools up to it's ' Sweet Spot ' is correct & normal ~ before you change anything else , remove the injectors and have them pop tested , most indie shops and Diesel Fuel Injection shops will have a pop tester and will do it while you wait .

DO NOT leave your injectors anywhere out of your direct site for even one moment ! .

If they're mis - matched or have even one that doesn't spray right on spec. or drools , spits visible droplets instead of a super fine fog like mist , consider replacing them all .

It only takes one bad injector to screw things up , sharply reduce power and kill your fuel economy .

Do a one tank fuel economy check , don't drive gently , just see what you're getting and go from there .
