FWIW, my approach has been to get the "lay of the land" during the first semester, develop some freindships and get the upper classmen to show the ropes," then move off campus. The new environment, study demands and acclimatization can be overwhelming at first, so getting established initially is best. If you get hooked up with the wrong crowd or in a bad living environment, it can be disasterous....no point in being one of the % that flunks out. IMO, impressing the profs (teaching assistants/lecturers) during the first year is important! They are on the look--out for talent....so get the grades from the begining!
