[diesel_mercedes] Hirschmann Antenna Service

Tom came by and took my last working electric antenna Sunday so last night I decided to address this situation as I'm prepping my '80 Diesel Coupe for sale so it needs a good one .

I collected my box of dead antennas & spare masts , loosened up the mast nut on one 1/2 extended one I had and powered it up , the whole bent & corroded antenna came out easily so I began by taking a spare mast , extending it then hand polishing it until it shone like new again then I used som Starting Fluid and a snorkel to wash out the accumulated grease and dirt when it was collapsed and help upside down , this flushed out a fearsome amount of black stuff , I wiped it off with a clean white rag (old T - Shirt) repeatedly as I extended & collapsed the shaft , when it finally stopped pushing out crud , I soaked a small bit of clean cloth in heavy duty silicone spray and hand lubed the entire shaft , extending & collapsing it as I went ,

I mounted up the motor box in the trunk & installed the cleaned & lubed shaft , it seems to work fine now .

I've done this to several old Hirschmann power antennas that were visibly worn through the chrome but not bent and they all seem to work just fine , every few months when I notice it slowing down I wipe the extended mast clean & when lube it well with the Silicone and it's good to go .
