Just an FYI.  My 1991 300D 2.5 (286K) and I just made a 650+ mile round trip to Philly area.  90% highway.  No A/C, but heater on auto as it's winter here.  Drove with "the flow" - though saw most of it in rear view mirror ;-)

 

33.36 MPG down, 33.23 MPG home.
