If you run the speakers down, they probably won't work any better.
I really need to begin photographing the awful looking and filthy Beckers I find in Pick-A-Part as they're *so* nasty , often you cannot read the letter & number on the buttons etc. and when they're finished they look so nice and sharp .
I use Meguiar's # 40 Rubber & Plastic Cleaner / Conditioner and soft tissues to gently loosen then float away the grime , then I use a Foo-Foo can of compressed air (Computer Cleaner) to blow out the hidden moisture that gets behind the buttons and into the LCD and screws it all up .
The original 1984 Becker Electronic in my Coupe , degraded until it stopped working completely over a week or two , I'd cleaned the face plate in situ a while before and as it died , each number crystal illuminated all it's segments and the radio wouldn't turn on nor off , no volume control and it said it was playing AM & FM simultaniously , all I heard was static .
As it's always damp & foggy overnight where I park it near SWMBO's house , I decided to remove the face plate and blow it out as I felt that any residual moisture from the cleaning , may have spread until it shorted out the circuit , I was amazed at how many tiny droplets of liquid blew out of the various cervices and buttons .
I just now re placed it and Lo ! it plays fine again so I took the newer Becker Grand Prix I'd replaced it with , out and tested some of the grimy but free face plates I'd collected , one works fine so I took that into the shop and ever so carefully cleaned off the grease , dust , food globs and God alone knows what all else , blew it dry and schlepped it out to the car and , once again I was rewarded with a nice playing radio that looks As-New again .
Tom says he wants to play with the faceplate with the loose & not working well volume tab , I'll also give him another faceplate that has bad LCD segments , else I'd have to toss it in the trash , a thing I hate to do .
I need to go through my stacks of Beckers and clean them all up for future use or maybe swap for other parts I need .
Soon I'll run down some good quality front speakers as one has begun to crackle a bit .
