Just in time to fund a mechanic's Christmas shopping, I went to the downtown L.A. law library and left my 1981 300SD in the nice, underground, dry, clean parking lot for a few hours. Drove across town on the I-10 freeway, running smooth and silent (as silent as a 300SD with 370,+++ miles will run). Pulled into the Brentwood Village post office and noticed a steady stream of oil droplets on the pavement behind where I had turned into a parking spot.
Got home, pulled into the garage and let it sit for 1/2 hour. saw what was apparently a lot of oil on the floor. Checked the oil, not a drop on the dipstick. Moved the car to a new spot in the garage. Next day there is a huge slick where oil has been flowing across the slope of the garage floor.
Drove the Caddy (hearse) to Court the next day, parked in the same library parking spot. As I pulled in, I noticed that the space had a huge oil puddle, almost the length of the car. When I got home, I looked at the spot where I had first parked the 300SD. The oil slick there also looked almost car length.
It appeared as if oil were dumping out of the back of the engine and flowing along the drive shaft where it then dropped onto the ground, the length of the drive shaft.
This is completely new. Although it promises to be a messy job, I think that I'll put it up on jack stands and see if I can spot where the leak is.
Anyone out there have a similar experience with the 617 engine? Sudden development of a major leak toward the rear of the engine?
Recent work includes changing two glow plugs, a valve adjust, and replacing two of the rubber mounts for the air cleaner. No sign of leak from any of those jobs.
ANY suggestions gratefully welcomed.
Tom
