I drive through Claremont every day, and have not seen such coolers for the past 35 years. But, they were all over the place from 1940 - 1960 if you were traveling from Barstow to Las Vegas.

My grandfather, who lived in Claremont, California was a traveling salesman. He always drove Studebakers. In the 1950's his Hawk showed up in South Carolina with this little cylinder in his back seat.

Seems he hung that out the window when he was in dry climates and used it to cool the interior of the car. I was too young to remember much of how it worked, but I clearly remember what it looked like hung on the outside passenger window.
