If a diesel has heat, fuel(air) and compression, it will start. Assuming this is a car you have been driving regularly. Black smoke is normal and ok at starting and some till warmed up. The better the engine and the better a engine runs, there will be less, but every time the engine turns over and does not start fuel gets sucked in and then when it does start, black smoke till its burned up. Maybe you got some air in the system somehow.Max P.S. I found out old diesel fuel loses cetane and makes for hard starting and loss of power
