Probably the more likely diagnosis is that the clutch disk has "grown" to the flywheel and pressure plate and won't release. I have an 850 Fiat with that problem now. The cure is to do the usual clutch job, but it is complicated by the necessity of prying the pieces apart. It will of course require replacement of the clutch disc and any other necessary parts. It's an easy job on a rear engined Fiat where the engine comes out in about 1/2 hour. Not so easy on a Mercedes.Had a badly worn clutch come apart and hook one of the steel
leaves on the plate with the housing, locked it up so it would not disengage. Cant remember which vehicle it was on but was likely either a 51 chev or a 54 ford many years ago.
