Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Car Starts...fixed for $20...thanks!

Caitlin,

As has been said before, the most expensive car you will ever own is a "cheap" Mercedes.  That rule is absolute, except that it is absolutely wrong for the owner who does his/her own maintenance.

The P-a-P yards ARE  your friends.  They are a smorgasbord of useful bits and pieces, as well as major components.

REMEMBER that your 300SD is a Mercedes 126 body tub with a different engine from the gassers.  But almost everything else remains the same.  So you can get parts off of gassers and they will fit on your car.

WARNING: there is a 126-L tub, for things like the 420SEL and 560 SEL.  These have a slightly longer body between the front and rear axles.  So the rear doors are longer, along with their glass - they don't fit your car.  Also, the rear seats in the upscale gassers are adjustable - wont work in your car.

But almost everything else is interchangeable from gas to diesel to gas.  ALL the switches, door parts, sun visors, etc.

Bogy, thanks for the reminder...

I haven't yet been (ever) to a pap...and it looks like Santa Fe has 3 (more 1hr away in ABQ). Lotsa folks drive MBs around here, so I hope these will prove fruitful.

Things I already know I'll be on the lookout for:

Hazard switch (PO was supposed to drop that off after I picked up the car...then disappeared)
Left signal lens (ditto)
Door pin
various plastic door parts n knobs
Lug wrench
Fuse box card :)

and when the budget gets bigger...seats (the "replacements" that the PO installed could stand improvement) and unchromed wheels

and of course whatever other goodies I can find...

honestly, I never would have even thought of fuses...so that is a great tip! Thanks Bogy!
