[diesel_mercedes] 84 300D leg room vacuum element gone bad - advice?

 

My "leg room vacuum element" went TU so I ordered a new one. It's accessible from either side by taking both sides of the under-dash panels out. I'm thinking about leaving the black plastic base of the old one attached to the car, and swapping out the rubber element and the attached arm, snapping either the new or the old pink plastic cap on it. If anyone has done this job and has any advice I'd appreciate it.
