[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Milage Check '82 240D Auto AC Used

I put some MMO & a bit of Startron into the last fillup because the fluel in the intake screen was darkish , I removed the intake screen for cleaning and it had no chunks in it .

251 miles , 28.6 MPG , $4.09 / gallon of branded Diesel Fuel .

The AC is sweet ~ nice and cool , dry as a bone inside during to - day's muggy outing . SWMBO complained it was too cold in there , B.S. sayeth I .

[diesel_mercedes] " Two Black Eyes "

I fixed the central locking on the white 240D and apparently did such a good job , it holds vacuum for over 24 hours .

Wow ~ that's better than the central locking on my '80 300CD .

The neat thing is : after 24 hours the locks nearly popped up , not the usual s l o w drag upwards you have to wait for .

SWMBO was pleased as punch .

I can hardly wait for the final parts to arrive from The Classic Center so I can have the fuel flap locking again too .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Can a girl drive a 300cd turbo coupe with a terrible vacuum leak?

It is not possible to be unable to shut off the engine by hand ~ I've tried it and if everything is perfect & the key is on , it takes a hefty shove but it'll still rumble to a halt .

I'd not let any girl I didn't know as a Mechanic who likes old cars , drive any vehicle I own , much less my irreplacable Mercedes Benz Diesel Sports Coupe .

Can't you just take a bus up to it and drive it home ? .

Just Tuesday a fine Lady I know , borrowed her brother's truck and killed the engine in about 5 miles , she even likes the truck but didn't seem to quite grasp " it's beat , drive it easy " as she spooled it up as fast as it'd go and held it there until it expired then called me and said 'oopsie ! ' .

Damon,

We are still out of town on vacation. I will be back on Wednesday night or Thursday morning. I will either come by Thursday or Friday of this week Aug. 4 or 5. Thanks for everything and I will figure something fair for the work too.

Btw, you have an awesome website. What other language is on it?

Mike

Re: Fw: [diesel_mercedes] 240D to Palm Springs

I've come to really enjoy the back roads, and I think they keep me more alert.  Going down the 5 with the cruise control on just about puts me to sleep anymore.  Getting off the freeway makes the drive much more interesting.

When in that neck, we always go over the Tehachapi, even if I was on 101 that is the way for me. Used to do that route when we lived in San Diego, There is a good road from Gilroy to Los Banos, then HWY 5 or 99 to Bakersfield & over the top, south on 395 at 4 corners, adelanto to victorville, then through apple valley, yucca valley Into desert hot spgs, mostly quiet desert roads that you can boogie along. Way nicer than the freeways.

[diesel_mercedes] 81 300D $375 in southern Utah , also 1974 450SEL $375

The guy says he can't get the turn signal or flashers to work.
But that's just a module, this sounds too good to be true.
Here is the link . . .

http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=16246045&cat=656&lpid=&search=mercedes

And here is the pertinent text . . .

I couldnt get the emergency flashers or the turn signals to work.
5 cylinder (non turbo) engine runs and sounds great. all parts were functioning well.
engine/ transmission- $300
whole car- $375
all other parts email me.

I hadn't thought about the 101 before, but that looks like a great and unhurried alternative.  I could even split the trip into two days if I feel really lazy.  The 240D has changed my driving style drastically - I used to fly down the 5 as fast as possible - usually around 105.  Now I feel like 70 is getting reckless!  :-)

Thanks to all for the suggestions.  I'm now looking forward to a drive I was dreading.

OK. Had my coffee and second thoughts. Try this:

280 from SF pick up 101 in SJ, 101 to Santa Barbara and thence to LA. No big hills, no deserts. Never done it in a 240, but my 300SD knows that rout by itself.

Beware of the near permanent CHP speed trap somewhere between King City and the far side of San Ardo.

A little Sumatra in the morning always helps..

[diesel_mercedes] Re: two questions

I bought replacement antennas off fleabay for around $20 as I remember and they work fine. If they need adapters they must come with them because I don't remember having to search for adapters anywhere. They also come with a variety of rigs for fitting various size holes in fenders, so you can mix-n-match a setup that works for your car.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] 240D: The Grapevine or Tehachapi?

If it were me, I'd take PCH to LA and pick up the 10 to Palm Springs.  Nice route for the 240, a pretty drive, and near enough to no hills involved.  Well, nothing that could be described  as a grade, anyway, and no deserts in August.

Late next week I'll be driving my '81 240D 4-speed from San Francisco to Palm Springs.  My plan was to tow it behind my Grand Cherokee, but the folks at U-Haul decided at the last minute that the Jeep wasn't substantial enough to tow the Mercedes and their trailer.  So I drove the Jeep with my stuff today and will fly up to bring down the Mercedes late next week.

No matter what the route, I have to get up & over the mountains and I'm interested in thoughts on which route is likely to be best.  The Grapevine seems steep to me and it means driving through metro LA to get out to Palm Springs.  I prefer taking Route 58 out of Bakersfield up through Tehachapi and across to 395.  That grade is loooong, but it seems like it might be easier for the 240 to climb than the Grapevine.  Of course it goes right across the Mojave desert through the middle of nowhere.  Not a great place to be if there's a breakdown.

So, what say ye?

Thanks in advance for your input.

My latest plan to get my coupe from NC to Houston is to have a girl drive it.

The primary problem with the car is the girl and the cars inability to shut off after the key is turned. My indirect understanding is that even opening the hood and pushing the shut off linkage still will not shut down the engine.

Any suggestions from you guys about disconnecting all of the vacuum system and then only connect what is necessary to shut the engine down.

I do think the girl can shift the automatic manually if the transmission vacuum needs to be disconnected as well.

I'll understand if this is not possible due to the unknowns of having a female driver and a terrible vacuum leak.

By the way....auto transportation providers are a total rip off.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] 240D: The Grapevine or Tehachapi?

I like both, or either, but if you do the grapevine - you do not have to go through LA metro, just take the #210 off of the #5 all the way to Redlands (or the #15) and hook up with the #10 to Palm Springs. Leave the Tongans in SF.
