Thanks Max and Tom.   Not knowing how old this gasket is, I'm betting on having to replace it.  I did adjust the valves on the wife's 300D last fall.  I'm not sure I'll ever get it down to a half hour, but it should go faster this time around.

Don, 

 

    You don't need a compression tester to adjust valves.  Invest in the Haynes manual for these cars.  It's no better than other Haynes books.  But it has clear pictures, diagrams and accurate data for the valve settings. 

 

    Pay attention to what Nate said.  You're going to need to do this operation every 3,000 miles.  By the third time, you'll be doing it in under 1/2 hour.
