OK, a valve adjustment it is. I’ll order a new valve cover gasket today. Hopefully I won’t need to invest in a compression tester; I hate buying tools that I’ll only use once. (Then again, if I get one, that could be my justification for buying more cars.) Thanks everyone.

More perfectly good Mercedes Diesels wind up junked from lack of routine valve adjustment than anything else .
Once they're adjusted & the engine finally starts , you'll need to do them again in 3,000 miles maximum .
