    You don't need a compression tester to adjust valves.  Invest in the Haynes manual for these cars.  It's no better than other Haynes books.  But it has clear pictures, diagrams and accurate data for the valve settings. 
 
    Pay attention to what Nate said.  You're going to need to do this operation every 3,000 miles.  By the third time, you'll be doing it in under 1/2 hour.

OK,  a valve adjustment it is.  I'll order a new valve cover gasket today.  Hopefully I won't need to invest in a compression tester; I hate buying tools that I'll only use once. (Then again, if I get one, that could be my justification for buying more cars.)  Thanks everyone.

Yes ;

More perfectly good Mercedes Diesels wind up junked from lack of routine valve adjustment than anything else .

Once they're adjusted & the engine finally starts , you'll need to do them again in 3,000 miles maximum .
