We used to use mechanical means: chisels, wire brushes, etc. But, I would be surprised if there were not a chemical alternative now, i.e., soak them, dip them, wipe them. But, we used bench grinders & wire brushes to clean pistons, valves, etc. - one of those jobs the new kid on the block gets to do.
