RE: [diesel_mercedes] Head experts...your insight please

Spent the better part of the day tearing into the recipient and yep Rob, this will be my daily. Like most of us, I don’t like cutting corners.  Always comes back to bite me in the ass.  So I think I’ll be sending the head out and having it massaged.  Wished I lived in the OC.  We’d be having a party in my garage with you, Nate, Tom and Brian!

On the one I pulled, no I didn’t check the compression but I drove it back from Richmond, VA and it ran great.  So, based on that major 12+ hour road trip in wintertime conditions (and about a month of back and forth) I feel it’s ok.  On the new DD, the DPO overheated it pretty badly and well after it starts and comes to temp, the white smoke plume is truly impressive!

I’m just not sure what the lower half looks like.  I pray once I get that head off I’ll find the block to be in decent shape.  The donor car had 171k on it and the recipient 151k so nearly the same miles.  I will say I am VERY happy so far on the donor in regards to rust.  It has a crazy kill switch/alarm set-up on it which I’m pulling (and praying the car will actually start once I do)

Ben,

As others have stated, I'm not an expert on MB heads, though I just had
the head off my Toyota truck worked on earlier this year.
Is this going to be your daily driver, or something that your dumping
time and money into? How many miles on the head as well as the block
it's going on? I'm assuming that the block shown is the donor, not the
one you're using? Did you run this engine before taking it apart?
Nothing is glaring in the head pics, beyond cleaning it up. That said,
if you didn't check the compression before you took it off, how do you
know it's OK?

I'd at least find out how much it would cost to get a valve job. I spent
$180 to get a valve job and the head re-surfaced for the Toyota (was
pitted from blown head gasket when I bought it). It came back all clean too.

If this is something you're fixing up, keeping and don't want to take
off again, then make sure it's OK.
Otherwise, just clean it up, and reinstall. :)
