Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Sub Freezing-- won't start (finally did)

I had the same issue last year. My car sat for three weeks. After doing everything that was supposed to work (I thought I'd have to wait till spring). I changed the fuel filters and the car started.
Maybe we are on to something here...
Glad that you are once again mobile,

Wow-- I was cranking for 30- 40 seconds, and felt certain I'd toast
the starter, and make my day even worse..

Importantly, I AM RUNNING..

I continued heat on the lines, the intake, without success..
Tried "Cracking" the injectors, and seemed to be getting fuel there
(I only cracked 1, 3 and 5 cylinders..)..

So I removed the "return" line, and cranked for another 30 seconds.
I "caught" the fuel in a used transmission fluid bottle I happened to
have in the trunk.. Got about 4 oz (100cc, actually) out.. Hmm..

Okay--cranking, 12v to the glow plugs, fuel.. Hmm..

About this time, I called the previous owner.. We'd had a similar
shitty time trying to get it started last February, before I bought
it.. We replaced ALL the glows with brand new ones at that time, and
since it started after that, we'd assumed we'd "fixed it.."

I went nuts for about a half an hour, then said, screw it, I'll
replace the fuel filters, I have them, probably needs done anyway..

I had NO desire to replace glow plugs today, but was thinking that
was next..

I replaced the filters, filling the "spin on" with Diesel 911.. Using
the "hand pump" I sucked more 911, then kerosene, into the injector
system to prime it.. I counted till I'd pumped 50 times, gave my
hand a rest, pumped 50 more, etc, till I'd got to 250.. Yeah,
overkill, and that was what I was looking for..

She cranked, she fired.. I think I probably woke the dead in the
hospital basement when she did, I was so damn happy.

I'm taking the fuel filter home, dumping it in a clear glass jar, and
seeing if I had water, or some other "issue" there..

Don't know why our filters don't have a water drain.. My VW's do! :)

I think I may ultimately install a water trap, or something down the
road..

I also swapped batteries with my 240D (at some point in this fiasco)--
I didn't have issues with my 240D in the cold.. I'm wondering if
I'm not getting what I should... Going to charge it and have it load
tested, before it goes back in...

Or maybe that battery will go in the 240D, if I ever find a radiator
for it! (sigh)

Thanks to all..

These boards are great, even if they've only confirmed you're doing
all the "right" things..
