There is no check valve on my cold water line to the hot water tank I have seen. In fact, my Surburban manual recommends not using one on the cold water line input to the tank. There is a check valve on the output of the hot water tank because of the by-pass valve for winterizing using antifreeze. Therefore I would say that any sort of back pressure valve has to be incorporated in the pump itself. I have had 2 of their pumps fail. Both were covered under their warrenty. When the pumps failed, they would continue to run as though air was entering the water line on the input side of the pump or what one woud say loosing its prime. No water pressure on the output side. Changing out the pump cured the problem. The second failure was at the Aug MI pre-rally.
When I called Shurflo for a return authorization, that is what I was told. They sent me a rebuilt pump of the old design by mistake. I called back and they sent me a new pump telling me not to send the rebuilt one back. I have no experience with Aquahot. May be they have a check valve built into their unit some where. As I posted previously, the information I am sharing comes from Shurflo. Jack S on the other group called and talked to a Shurflo engineer and verified what I am posting because of the accumulator taks issue on that group. Chuck B

Chuck,
I don't think I have ever seen you say what failed in the pump end. Hot
water is hot water heated with diesel or propane. All systems have a check
valve to hold pressure against the pump. This is what controls the pressure
system. Without this check valve pressure would bleed back and the pump
would start and build pressure then shut down, much as if the system had a
leak down stream of the pump. The pressure tank is just a wide spot in the
system that holds the "energy" expended by the pump and to reduce cycling.
Again, I ask, what failed?
Thanks,
