[diesel_mercedes] Seat & Injector Repairs

O.K. Conrad ;

Remember : unless it's plywood, you cannot have 'too firm' a seat ~ they'll settle into your form sooner than you expect and soft seats are only comfy for a short drive before making you sore .

Hardware stores have large packages of the wider zip ties necessary to hold the pool noddles in place .

Good idea on trying your hand at injector service, may I suggest an Utrasonic heated bath typ of cleaner for the various parts and nozzles ? .

Never, EVER use a wire, jet cleaner etc. in the nozzles ! this will ruin the all important fog spray pattern .

One fellow who used to be here made a simple shim adjusting tool from a piece of hardwood , he used a bottoming drill bit to make a shallow flat bottomed depression in the hardwood plank to hold the shim then used a belt sander with very fine grit on it to dress the shims ~ each time you shave off a tiny bit of shim the pop pressure goes up .

I bought an India made direct copy of the BOSCH pop tester for $200 off E-Bay, I suggest it .

I'm sure a $20 set of electronic calipers will help you sort out the various shims you're soon going to have a pile of, this will make adjusting the pop pressure easier by far .

If you can shuffle the shims and so on to get a set of injectors to pop within 5 # of each other your engine will run a smooth as a 1948 Buick's straight eight cylinder engines, no kidding ~ you'll love it and  the off idle performance will get *much* better too .

Remember that HOSPITAL CLEANLINESS is paramount here .

I thought we did much better than I thought we would.

I did find one broken spring, but the seat overall is in much better shape than what I have now.  Also, it's been surprisingly therapeutic to clean all the grime off the seat and watch the original color come back into view. I pulled it from a white 240D; even after all my cleaning, it's still a greenish-off-white?  Weird color, but nice and firm.

> Maybe stuff some pool noodles  in the 240D seat you son bought as a prophylactic measure.....

I was thinking the same.  The 240D seat is for my 300D; Son got the fully functional Palamino W126 power seat--which also cleaned up nicely and installed easily.

> So far, of the dozens of used injectors I've bought / scavenged/ found, only two were any good so I'd not pay for them apart from buying a set of spares to be used as cores....

That's my intent.  I expect I'll have to rebuild any/all of these injectors, but from the ragged idle of my engine, even with nicely adjusted valves and clean fuel filters, I'm guessing my current ones aren't in great shape, so I figured I'd rehab these, put new nozzles on them, and swap them in.
