I'm in the greater Washington, DC area, which is fairly affluent (overall, though there are still plenty of pockets of poverty) and supports multiple Mercedes-Benz dealers. There are a lot of MBs zooming around here, though older diesels have disappeared fast since about 2012, which was the peak of the greasecar/biodiesel fad around here. You still see a few for sale on Craigslist, but there used to be 10+ available at any given time. Prices for these cars have also dropped around here, but that could also be because the cars showing up for sale are really thrashed and/or rusted out.
The u-pull-it yard is part of a large conglomerate of 6+ yards. I think the best parts are stripped by the company before anything is ever put out for the scavengers, and only cars that are either (1) 10 years or older; or (2) severely damaged (i.e., fire, massive collision) get placed in the u-pull-it yard to begin with.
...and in all of that inventory, there were literally only 2 ironhead diesels, both of whom got placed on the u-pull-it lot in August 2018. I expect them to get hauled away and crushed most any day, which is why I'm considering a second rescue mission there to grab parts before they disappear for good.
