ACK! Warm weather states where the less intrepid can still ride all year.... (Well, maybe not northern Nevada.)
Best places are areas where the idea of snow scares "riders" off their bikes. Best time to buy is October to Christmas, when those same are giving bikes away. I picked up a nice '82 Yamaha XJ550 "MAXIM" last November for cheap-cheap, and it got me through the winter. Now, all cleaned up and with new paint on the tank and side covers, and new rubber, I will soon be selling it for triple my investment.
I'd offer it to you, but I believe it has too many cylinders....
Have you tried garage sales and flea markets? I've picked up some real bargains over the years. These are places where most motorcyclists don't go to buy a bike, and sellers often don't even know what they're selling. (From a conversation I had a couple of years ago over a '78 Yamaha XS650 Special: "I dunno much about it. My son left it in the garage ten years ago, and he said I should sell it for whatever I can get. I'm asking $125, but I'll take $100." I gave him $75....)
