Nate: You make a good point. I was restricting my discussion to the w123 chassis models. But you are correct in that later (heavy) models used this beefy tranny. The 722.303 has the highest torque rating of the Benz line of trannys for it's time. As an engineer I am beyond impressed that this transmission is still the spine of the Benz automobiles. Of course they improve details as they go. But the core of this transmission is so robust and so well conceived that they have not needed to design a new one in all these years. And as an electrical engineer, the transition into electrically controlled solenoids for fluid path control inside the box is beautiful. Mostly because the wires that control the solenoids don't have to be driven by a computer, but can be energized by manual switches to make this a manually controlled slushbox. I like that idea. To me it is the best of both worlds - fluid coupling and absolute driver control. Forgive me, but I think I am having a geekgasm.

I thought the S Klasse Sedans had the beefiest tranny .
I was underneath my '84 300CD to - day, laboriously scrubbing off 33 years of accumulated oil, Diesel fuel and road mung that was collected by the gooey mess......
Whew am I ever tired and the job's no where near done yet but I'm happier .
I guess I need to look at the tranny's tag # to see what model it is .
