While we didn't get to go to the 'Pike', we did spend time riding our bikes to the smaller amusement park 'Balboa Fun Zone', in Newport Beach, CA, which was a good place for ice cream, and and few rounds of Skee Ball, then off to the Wedge surf spot, where you could see some giant waves, and surf/ body surf if you dared. True, dumps are fun for kids.

It was fun. Ten year old boys in 1950 did not know any better and back then drunken sailors, hookers, and sleaze balls did not pay any attention to ten year olds out for Saturday fun. Great place with fond memories. Probably was a dump, but hey, dumps are fun places for young boys.
