Re: [diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '82 240D Slushbox

Both horsepower and mileage suffer at high altitudes.  Using the formula:  (altitude in feet/1000) x .03 x horsepower at sea level to determine the loss, (5000/1000) x .03 x 71=10.65 will have your 240D dynamo will fall to just over 60hp at 5000 feet, and maybe 55hp at 7000 feet.

Assuming your car still has the 71hp at sea level it was born with....

Happy birthday to email, as on this day in 1969, the first message was sent over ARPANET.  It went from UCLA to Stanford.

Also, Selma Hayek is 50 today....

Oops ~ DUH 29.9 MPG's .

It really should be better but I'd been keeping the AC on the entire time until I made it to Albuquerque .

Usually my Las Vegas runs net me 32 ~ 34 MPH's , I had to crest some 5,000' ~ 7,000' hills @ 45 MPH or so , I think it's really getting to be time to do that long overdue valve job .

The '81 240D I found in the Junk Yard had all it's injectors , I'd grabbed 'em but I only have the factory tool kit with me this being SWMBO's car , she keeps it clean and tidy , I don't like to carry tools/parts in it .

Sooooo,

What IS the mileage?  It's hard for me to figure for myself, without knowing how many gallons were used....

515 miles (low fuel light on @ 499 in the middle of NOWHERE, OOPS ) , AC the entire time , mostly between 60 & 70 MPH , lots of hills I slowed down to 45 MPH on a few and used my hazard lights , the Big Rigs were even slower so I was prolly O.K. safety wise but.....

Startron used , the clear plastic intake screen look like the fuel is clear but the screen proper is stil dark , I think I'll change it the next time I get below 1/4 tank .

Car seems to be running fine , I *do* wish I had all four cylinders of compression but no oil squirting out every where so I'll prolly do a valve job on it when I get back to Los Angeles .

Rebuild the tranny to .

The R-12 Charged AC seems to be working O.K. , not great but cool enough when I hang my shirt on the rear seat headrest (TIP: when you find European Spec. Junkers @ P-A-P, GRAB the unobtanium stuff !)  and just wear my tank top .

Carrying and drinking , plenty of water in my 64 Oz. insulated jug .

I was told there's a $10 Senior's Pass fot Federal National Parks , as soon as I see where to buy it , I will .

I've seem more bums than usual and bought gasoline for two Couples , one was clearly B.S. scammers as their truck only took 5 gallons , the others I met in " DO NOT brake down here,New Mexico" looked pretty rough and had no cute story , just ' we are trying to get to Colorado ' so I bought them 10 gallons .

I'd hate to be stuck here .
