I have one of the lower radiator hose mounted models, though only use it when in the mountains, during a cold winter. It's much easier to install, and does warm up everything connected to the coolant system. Some say, it's not as good as the block mount, yet do you really want to risk a cracked block, trying to mess with that?
Something like these (I didn't check if they'll fit)

You should also look into a heater insert that fits into the lower radiator hose. It's basically a steel tube with a heater insert. to install it you cut into the center of the hose, shorten the ends slightly to accommodate the heater section that has the electric cord coming from it and clamp the unit in place. My car came with one, but I haven't had to use it, so I can't verify how well it works.

Max, yes that block heater was very useful. I am considering ordering one anyway, and see if I can find a mechanic I can trust to put it in. In the SF bay area, there were still some MB mechanics left ( and still junkyard cars), but out here in MD. they are harder to find. If anyone knows of any in the Baltimore area, please let us know.
But I will use the electric coil underneath the oil pan in the meantime when it is very cold, even with the glow plugs...I just want to make it easier on her on cold starts.
