Re: [diesel_mercedes] Digest Number 6144

At this point if the battery charge doesn't work we will have to use Ohm's Law to find the problem.  If voltage goes down something else is going up namely resistance.  Something in the wire going to the starter is bad.  Causing heat from the resistance causing the battery not to come up to voltage.  I notice when the car is really cold the charging system works better.  When it warms up is when I have the trouble.  So a bad connection when warm.  What could that be?  Lawrence Rhodes

Well I bit the bullet and bought and installed a Bosch rebuilt alternator.  Not much help.  While the commutators were worn with grooves from the brushes it did function.  The new alternator is slightly better by .2vdc I'm charging the battery now as with all this screwing around and load testing it really drained my battery to the point of not starting.  I'm hoping the charge will bring the battery to normal and the very weak Mercedes charging system can then work it's best. If this doesn't work I'll get a new battery.  If that doesn't work then there is a wire somewhere with a loose connection under the dash I just wish would be easy to find.  It is still taking a long time to come up to 13.7vdc.  Way too long.  I would think it should instantly go to 14.4 volts.  It's not.  Lawrence RHOdes
