Those filters only keep out rocks and small birds ~ they (by design) allow a lot of dust and wear particles to enter your engine .
Once you replace all three rubber mounts and the probably broken 'T' support , it'll be fine ~ I too went through this until I learned to use only brandy new rubber mounts and to keep the engine clean so the normal oil that seeps out , doesn't degrade the motor mounts and allow the engine to bounce and shake a lot , this of course causes the heavy air cleaner to work loose and or brake .

1984 300sd ....... has gone back and forth from MD to CA, now back in MD.
Note: Awesome MB mechanic in Fremont Ca, is Chahal Auto near the new Warm Springs Bart. This guy has two 300sd himself, and has 30+ years experience fixing MD diesels. Has own shopm and keeps lot of parts in stock. Opinionated, and will let you know what he thinks, but keeps the cars running.
