Rob ;
Much can be done with band and accumulator adjustments along with routine HOT ATF and tranny filter changes ~ SWMBO's '82 240D had a weak , flaring up shift slushbox when we bought it a Decade ago , eventually it refused to shift into fourth gear so I limped it to Victor and told him it needed rebuilding , instead he adjusted it and the goofy little vacuum valves on the throttle linkage and it's still going strong several years later.....
I really wanted him to rebuild it but he said it wasn't necessary just yet (? an Honest Mechanic ?)
He's in Pasadena if you need to have yours peaked and tweaked .
Far less than the usual $1,500 rebuild .

My tranny went out a bit earlier 180k, so I replaced it with good used one which works yet needs a rebuild. I have a different tranny used only on 85 CA cars, now with 205k.
For protecting hoses, zip strip pieces of cut hose on to the hose you want protected. Knee pads....
